Chase Utley headed for surgery

PHILADELPHIA - November 20, 2008 Chase Utley will have right hip surgery, according to a news release from the Phillies.

Since the end of the World Series, Utley "has had several diagnostic studies in regards to right hip symptoms that he had during the 2008 season." Team doctor Michael Ciccotti Dr. Bryan Kelly at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York have both examined Utley. The surgery they are recommending will happen next week.

The recovery will allow for the initiation of baseball activities between three and four months, however, the total recovery time may require four to six months.

It could be June until Utley is able to rejoin the Phillies, if the full 6 months recovery is required.

Also, Phillies 3rd baseman Pedro Feliz will have back surgery. After surgery, Feliz will complete an eight-to-12 week rehabilitation program.
