Police chase ends when driver hits tree

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE - November 27, 2008

It all started at about one in the morning on Thanksgiving Day, when investigators say the driver sped away from a police checkpoint at the Augustine cutoff at Alapokas Drive.

Officers say the driver raced through the city of Wilmington, and at one point hit several parked cars.

Eventually, the driver ended up back near the checkpoint where he lost control of his car and struck a tree.

The force of the collision caused the two passengers in the car to be thrown from the vehicle.

Rescue workers had to cut the driver out of the car. He's in critical condition at the hospital.

There's no word on the conditions of the passengers. There are no reports of any other injuries.
