1 million gallon sewage spill closes Milford River

MILFORD, Del. (AP) - December 3, 2008 Delaware's Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control says a major sewer line along state Route 1 north of Milford broke, causing the discharge.

Kent County crews worked yesterday to fix the broken pipe, but environmental officials said one million gallons had already entered Mispillion River.

The river is closed indefinitely between Milford and Delaware Bay because of concerns about contamination. Cedar Creek near Slaughter Beach is also closed where the creek and beach waters mix.

State Water Resources Director Katherine Bunting-Howarth says county sewage system managers had no choice but to divert sewage into the river.
