Bullets narrowly miss Del. driver

NEWARK, Del. - December 5, 2008 - It was a miracle that no one was hurt.

Charles Walton was driving through a parking lot in the People's Plaza Shopping Center in Newark, headed to work around 2:30 a.m. Friday, when a someone in a parked van suddenly began firing shots.

The back window of his car was shattered, and left a bullet hole in his driver side headrest.

"Amazingly enough, I'm okay. My wife is totally a wreck," Walton said. "Probably a bunch of kids or something trying to show their bravado, and unfortunately I was on the other end."

While its incredible that Walton was not hurt, what's even more amazing is that police found a bullet inside his jacket.

"Just missed him," said Sgt. Joshua Bushweller of the Delaware State Police. "This could have been a homicide investigation instead of a drive-by shooting."

Police say what happened here should serve as a warning to others who go to and from work at odd hours.

"You're out there with criminals. Just be vigilant and beware of your surroundings," Sgt. Bushweller said.

The search for a suspect continues.
