Student charged after school evacuated

GRAYS FERRY - December 10, 2008 It occurred around 10:15 this morning at the Alcorn Elementary School, located in the 3200 block of Dickinson Street.

The school district tells Action News that at least a dozen students were treated at the scene after pepper spray was discharged in the school. A 12-year-old female student brought the pepper spray to class today after having an incident with a group of girls at the school last Friday, according to officials.

They add that during class today, a classmate of that student got her pepper spray and discharged it.

The 12-year-old is being charged for bringing the pepper spray to school. Police are trying to determine which of her classmates actually sprayed it.

Several students and adults were treated for irritated eyes and throats.

All of the students were moved into the auditorium during the incident. The school was aired out and students were allowed back in around 10:40 a.m.

Police launched a full scale investigation into the incident, bringing in Homeland Security to help identify the chemical that was used.

Classes were previously scheduled for a half a day today.
