Police search for credit card thief

SPRINGFIELD TWP., Pa. - December 17, 2008 - Police in Springfield Township, Pennsylvania are looking for a woman who, they say, has been stealing credit cards.

Images of the woman were taken at a Genaurdi's supermarket where she used a stolen credit card. Instead of food, she bought hundreds of dollars in gift cards. She also filled up with $40 in gas before taking off.

The card had been taken just moments earlier from a customer at a "Panera Bread" restaurant in the same shopping center.

"She wasn't aware of it until several days later when the credit card company told her she exceeded her credit limit," said Lt. William Clark of the Springfield Twp. Police.

Investigators say the thief is very careful to take only one credit card. If she took the whole wallet, the victim would notice and report the theft immediately.

Springfield Twp. Police believe this woman has been very busy.

Police say they're getting two to three calls per week from victims who've visited the same restaurant.

Authorities warn everyone, especially women, to be mindful of their surroundings and to keep their wallets and pocketbooks close.

Another tip: Take just one credit card with you when shopping, and leave the rest at home.

If you think you recognize the woman in the surveillance video, call Springfield Twp. Police at (610) 544-5507.
