Car struck by train

WILMINGTON, Del. - January 16, 2009 The crash was reported at approximately 3:40 pm.

Preliminary investigation reports a 2002 Hyundai Accent, operated by a Wilmington man, was traveling southbound on Montchanin Road approaching a railroad crossing.

A train was traveling northbound on the tracks approaching Montchanin Road.

The flashing lights on the railroad signal were activated and the train was sounding its horn when for an unknown reason the Hyundai attempted to cross the tracks causing the crash.

The 65-year-old male driver of the car was trapped in his vehicle for approximately 15 minutes before being extricated by personnel from Talleyville Fire Company.

New Castle County paramedics treated the subject for chest and possible pelvic injuries as well as multiple lacerations.

He was transported to Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police helicopter.

He was admitted to that facility in stable condition.

No other parties were injured.

There are no signal arms that cross the roadway at this location. The roadway was temporarily closed and has since been reopened.
