Police investigating school heroin scare

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - February 3, 2009

Because the white powdery substance is wrapped in a way that to the young mind looks like candy, Wydeeya Griffin said her 8-year-old son, Dazmir, tasted it.

"He didn't take a lot of it, he just tasted it and he said it was nasty so he spit it back out," she said. "He said he started feeling dizzy so they rushed him to Children's Hospital."

All of the children were screened for toxins and medical personnel determined that all five children would be okay.

Meantime, the focus was on how a 2nd grader managed to get a hold of 10 to 20 packets of heroin and carry it into McDaniel Elementary School at 1800 South 22nd Street.

At first, police said the 2nd grader tried to say he got it from a neighbor, which turned out not to be true. Later, police said the boy admitted he took it from his dad's jacket thinking it was candy and brought it to school.

"I was devastated, I mean, in 2nd grade, a 2nd grader brings drugs to school, that's absolutely insane," said Angela D'Andrea who is a grandparent.

"My first impression was total irresponsibility of the parents, in fact so much so to have a substance like this in the home," said Homer Muhammad who is a parent.

Tuesday night police were zeroing in on a suspect. A search warrant was being served at his home, with charges said to be pending against the boy's father including drugs and multiple charges of endangering the welfare of children.
