Who killed Benjamin Elder?

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - February 13, 2009

Benjamin Elder's brother described him as a hard working, kind, family man. He worked the night shift as a cab driver in Philadelphia.

On Saturday night, April 19th, Benjamin worked his regular shift. The next morning a passerby saw the cab in the 18-hundred block of north 20-th street in North Philadelphia.

"Police find him about 9:30 in the morning in a parking lot in his cab," John Apeldorn of the Citizens Crime Commission.

Benjamin was slumped over the wheel, with a fatal gunshot wound behind his right ear.

"You know somebody's got to be made to pay for it," said Apeldorn.

Police say driving a cab in the city at night can be very dangerous.

"Cab drivers are susceptible to that sort of thin they're out there they do carry some money sometimes and people that need money know that also," Apeldorn said.

However, in this case Benjamin's money and jewelry were not taken.

Before he was killed, that shift was going to be Benjamin's last one as a cab driver. His family said he had secured another job doing maintenance at the airport.

There is a one-thousand dollar reward for anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
