Woman celebrates 107th birthday

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - March 5, 2009 - Among her presents was a jigsaw puzzle, one of dozens that she does day after day.

When she isn't working on puzzles, she likes to talk about the good old days, like the time Teddy Roosevelt came to her hometown in Coatesville.

"He was just a little short guy and he yelled at the boys to look at the train, see him come in on an train," Harriett said.

Roosevelt's visit was headline news back then, but today it was Harriett's birthday that made the local newspaper. When she isn't reading the headlines, she's reading her Bible, and receiving visits from friends and relatives, like her 83-year-old brother.

82-year-old Isabelle Marshal is Harriett's daughter, and takes care of her mom in her West Chester home.

"It's so nice to have her. It's a joy to have her, and she never complains," Isabelle said.

Even at her age, Harriett doesn't have a special diet like most senior citizens. She eats pie, cakes, and lots of candy.

"I eat candy every day, breakfast and dinner," Harriett said.

The only pill she takes is for high blood pressure, and still eats other favorite foods, like scrapple and bacon.
