Police say the suspect was observed buying some items, while pocketing others.
He was confronted outside the store by the guard, who then took the suspect inside his security booth for questioning, but police say the suspect had no intention of answering.
"When the offender pulls a gun from his rear pocket, fires three times, striking the security guard one time in the head. The bullet actually went into his head, hit his cranium. Another shot hit him in the shoulder. The male then fled on foot from this location. We're not sure if he got into a vehicle," Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives said.
An ambulance rushed the guard to Temple Hospital where he is in critical, but stable condition.
Saeed Martin, an 18-year-old employee, says Leroy always looked out for everyone.
"He always told me to keep my head up, stay in school, do everything positive. He's like a real special person to me," Martin said.
Police are checking surveillance video for the suspect.
"I pray for his family and for him and I'm sorry that this happened," Cynthia Green of Wynnefield said.
The search for the shooter continues.
