Police ID woman found in 1994 in N.J. mall

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - March 23, 2009 Lt. Eduardo Ojeda of the New Jersey Department of Human Services police never gave up trying to find the name of the well-dressed elderly woman.

Unable to speak and diagnosed with Alzheimer's, the woman has been bedridden in a New Jersey psychiatric hospital since she was found at the Woodbridge Center mall.

Ojeda discovered recently that the woman is 74-year-old Elba Leonor Diaz Soccarras, a Colombian immigrant who struggled for years as a single mother and factory worker.

Tips from the public and Colombian officials helped establish her identity.
