On Friday, the base inaugurated the new runway, which took 17 months to build and measures 13,800 feet. It replaces a concrete-and-asphalt runway that had been battered for decades by heavy aircraft taking off and landing.
The 2009 Dover Air Force Base Open House and Air Show will be headlined by the Thunderbirds, the Air Force's air demonstration team. It will feature 14 other aerial acts and displays of 26 vintage aircraft.
Base officials expect to draw up to 200,000 people for each day of the air show.
