Search for senior bank robber

PHILADELPHIA - June 8, 2009 Police released surveillance photos of the bandit who struck Monday morning at the Citizens Bank at 2001 Market Street in Center City.

Lawmen say the bandit is between 60 and 65-years-old.

"In the middle of all these people on 9:30 on a Monday morning, I mean how did he even pull it off," said Khalio Parker of North Philadelphia.

It's a question a lot of people are asking after hearing the Citizen's Bank at 2001 Market Street was robbed Monday morning. Police say the surveillance pictures show the suspect handing the teller a threatening note. He then stuffed an unknown amount of cash in a pillow case. He was last seen heading west on Market Street. He's described as 5'11, with a thin build, wearing a baseball cap, large wrap around sunglasses and a brown logo t-shirt. But here's what may strike you as odd. The man is thought to be in his mid sixties or early seventies.

"Well certainly it's on the upper end. I mean we try not to be surprised by anything we see but it's on the upper end of what we see age wise," said FBI spokesman J.J. Klaver.

But considering that many are still struggling from a spiraling economy and hundreds of thousands nationwide are victims of monthly job losses, hearing Monday's suspect is a senior, didn't necessarily come as a surprise to people who work in the area.

"I'm in collections and I'm hearing all sorts of weird stories from people from all walks of life that you wouldn't normally expect to hear from people these days so to hear someone in their 60s robbing a bank sounds to me like it's par for the course," said Paul Liberatori of Marlton, N.J.

"I think because the economy is so bad people are doing things they would have normally never done before so it's sad but not surprising," said Eve Crawford of Haddonfield, N.J.

"We haven't really seen that in Philadelphia, I mean anecdotally we've heard that but we haven't seen that in Philadelphia bank robberies are up a bit but they're fairly stable," said Klaver.
