Save on school uniforms

PORT RICHMOND - August 28, 2009

Like many Philadelphia parents, Solmarilyn Rodriguez gets uniforms for her three daughters and two sons at Forman Mills.

"It's cheaper!" she says. "I can get a lot of uniforms for them instead of going to expensive stores."

Since Philadelphia began requiring uniforms, Forman Mills had worked to become the go-to store for budget-minded shoppers.

"We guarantee that we have the lowest price in all uniforms: tops, bottoms, all sizes," says Forman Mills spokesman Christopher Streahle.

"When you come down to Forman Mills, you'r definitely gonna be able to stretch those bills," he says.

Here, bottoms are -- skirts, pants, shorts and jumpers are $7.99, and tops start at $4.99.

They also have accessories -- like boys' ties for $2.99... Girls' bows for $1.99... and sweaters for $12.99.

And stores stock colors according to what's required by nearby schools.

Shopping for uniforms online is another way to save. J.C. Penney, Target and Sears all have extensive uniform inventories. And from time-to-time they offer free shipping as well.

Finally, a quick check of Craig's List also yields a number of new and used uniform items, many for a fraction of their original retail prices.
