NJ mayor falls behind on taxes

RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - August 12, 2009 Rutherford Mayor John Hipp has missed three payments totaling $6,300.

Since he took office last year, Hipp has been critical of the developer EnCap for not paying its $1.6 million property tax bill. An insurer for the high-profile developer covered the debt about two weeks ago.

Hipp told The Record of Bergen County that he's fallen behind because his law practice has struggled as he devotes 40 to 50 hours per week to being mayor. He said he'll pay most or all of what he owes this week.

The mayor's job comes with a $4,000 annual stipend.
