Authorities in suburban Philadelphia are trying to identify a body found by firefighters after extinguishing a burning car. Pennsylvania State Police Cpl. David Pezzano says a passerby reported the car fire Wednesday afternoon along a road in Middletown Township, Delaware County.

He says firefighters had no idea that someone was inside until they extinguished the fire, by which time the body inside was unrecognizable.

Pezzano says it was so badly burned that police could not tell if the body was that of a man or a woman.

The body and the car have been taken to the office of the Delaware County medical examiner.
