VW recalling 13,500 vehicles

WASHINGTON - August 20, 2009 Also Thursday, Audi of America, Volkswagen's luxury division, announced its own recall of 2,500 vehicles citing similar concerns. All of the vehicles were built between September 2008 and August 2009.

The Volkswagen recall affects 2009 model year and a limited number of 2010 Jetta, Jetta SportsWagen, GTI and Eos vehicles. The Audi recall applies to 2009 MY A3, TT and TT Roadster models equipped with S tronic transmissions.

A "very limited" number of 2010 MY A3 cars equipped with S tronic transmissions are also affected, Audi said.

Volkswagen said some of its vehicles could have a faulty temperature sensor in the transmission, which could lead to the warning lamp lighting up on the dashboard. In rare cases, the transmission could shift into neutral. Audi also cited problems with warning lamps, and in rare cases, with the transmission going into neutral.

More than a quarter of the Audi cars involved in the recall are currently in dealer stock or at delivery ports and will be inspected before sales to customers.

Volkswagen said there have been no crashes or injuries reported related to the problems that triggered its recall. Owners will have their vehicles inspected and repaired if necessary. Customers can call (800) 444-8982 for more information.

Audi said it plans to contact owners of its affected vehicles over the next few weeks and have their vehicles inspected and repaired if needed. Audi customers can call 1-800-253-2834 for information.
