Myers makes first rehab start after hip surgery

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - August 20, 2009 Pitching for Class-A Clearwater on Thursday he gave up two hits and threw 13 of his 19 pitches for strikes.

"I had a few jitters because it was the first time out in a couple of months," Myers said. "Everything felt good and the velocity was better than expected. Now I am just ready for the next one to start."

He does not know when he will pitch next.

"Whenever they want me I am ready to go. I'll throw tomorrow, the next day, whenever."

Myers was scheduled to pitch Saturday but he fell stepping out of his car Friday night and injured his eye. Initially Myers said he was hurt playing catch with his 4-year-old son.

"It was a freak accident, that is all I can really say about it," Myers said. "It's something you don't expect to happen and now you just try and be more cautious. Make sure your feet are under you before you take that next step."

He regrets first giving a false story about the accident.

"I wish it kind of hadn't happened because it stirred up more stuff than it should have," Myers said. "Next time I will tell it straight because I just felt embarrassed about a grown man falling out of a car."

Myers, out since May 28 due to a torn labrum in his right hip, had surgery on June 4. He was 4-3 with a 4.66 ERA in 10 starts.

Prior to the start of the game, Myers spent time with young right-hander Julian Sampson, They worked on and talked pitching, much like Curt Schilling had done in the past.

"He is one of our own, so why not help him," Myers said.
