A canoe trip in Wharton State Forest turned tragic after a man dove into the water but never resurfaced. State police say 32-year-old Paul Davidson of Sewell and two friends had been riding in canoes Saturday in the park's Batsto Village section when they stopped for a swim shortly before 7 p.m.

When Davidson failed to surface, his friends notified authorities. Divers found his body around 11 p.m. in waters off Washington Township, about 50 yards from where he was last seen.

Authorities believe Davidson drowned, but a cause of death has not been determined.
