A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman says two small planes have collided in midair about 40 miles south of Phoenix, sending one crashing to the ground. FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says one person on board the single-engine Cessna 150 was killed when it crashed Wednesday morning in the town of Coolidge. A second person has been airlifted to a hospital.

The pilot of a single-engine Piper Cherokee handed safely in a field about two miles from where the Cessna crashed. Neither the pilot nor a passenger were hurt.

Gregor says no one on the ground was hurt. Inspectors with the FAA and National Transportation Safety board are on the way to the crash sites.
