Pot found in pot on High Street

MILLVILLE, N.J. - September 10, 2009 Earlier this week resident Mary Thomas noticed police activity around a hanging plant and took pictures.

As it turned out, a couple of marijuana plants were growing among the supertunias about 12 feet in the air.

"It was funny, kind of surprising because you don't see that much around here," Thomas said.

For more than 10 years High Street has been lined with beautiful hanging plants. Then, on Tuesday, a passerby in the 100 block spotted the weed among the flowers.

"It could have been tossed in as a practical joke. It is watered every day, so it's a good environment to grow," said Sgt. Ross Hoffman of the Millville Police Department.

Action News talked to the Millville-area grower who supplies the hanging plants, who said it could be a case of mistaken identity. Earlier in the day he speculated that the plants may have been cleome. It's a plant that looks a lot like marijuana and is grown in the same greenhouse as the supertunias.

But Sgt. Hoffman said they confirmed the plant was, indeed, marijuana.

"We did field test it and it did test positive for the presence of marijuana," said Sgt. Hoffman.

The marijuana is in the police evidence room and authorities say it will be destroyed. As far as they're concerned the case of the misplaced cannabis is closed.
