NJ losing millions to toll cheats

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. (AP) - September 29, 2009

Turnpike Authority spokesman Joe Orlando says toll revenue supports more than 95 percent of the agency's operations.

Orlando says motorists have tossed slugs, foreign coins, fast-food wrappers, used condoms and even a shark head in the toll baskets.

The fine for violating the toll is $25. Orlando says the agency collected $15.2 million from fines between August 2008 and July 2009. Orlando says the money pays the contract with the company that processes toll violations.

State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones says troopers track down repeat offenders.

Jones says troopers in August arrested a Bayonne man who is accused of driving through tolls 2,351 times without paying.
