Four killed in crash on I-95

PHILADELPHIA - October 4, 2009

The crash happened at 1:24 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 at the Girard Avenue exit, involving a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer and a 2006 Freightliner tractor-trailer.

The Lancer was travelling southbound on the highway between Allegheny and Girard Avenue at a high rate of speed, making several lane changes. Upon approaching Girard Avenue, the car was in the left lane and made a sudden steering change into the right lane. That's when, police say, the driver lost control.

The car began a clockwise slide. The left front of the car slid under the left rear of the truck, which was in the right southbound lane of the highway. The car continued to rotate and one occupant was ejected. The vehicle came to a final stop on the southbound exit ramp of Girard Avenue.

All four occupants of the car were killed in the crash. Three of the victims were wearing seat belts.

The truck driver, 57-year-old Frank Maier, was not injured.

Due to the severity of the crash, the southbound lanes of I-95 were closed until 7:00 a.m.

So far, police have not released any information on the victims.

The accident remains under investigation by state police.
