Jerry Caldwell says he was inspired to build what may be the world's largest pumpkin carriage on a cross country trip where he traveled through small towns each boasting their own oversized attractions.

The retired IBM executive says he saw big artichokes, giant watermelons and a large ball of barbed wire.

When he got home, he decided Cheswold was a small town in need of something big.

The beekeeper knows pumpkins can grow big - he raised a 400-pound pumpkin about 10 years back - but this time he used fiberglass, lumber, fabric and hydraulic brakes to build the 7-foot-tall, eight-passenger carriage.

Caldwell says he has contacted Guinness World Records officials to see if his creation is a record.
