Teen gets jail in fatal hotel robbery attempt

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - October 29, 2009

Sixteen-year-old Calvin Haines Jr. of Coatesville pleaded guilty Wednesday in the August 2008 robbery of the Microtel Inn & Suites in West Chester. Authorities said two suspects tied up and beat a night clerk at the hotel and then broke through a window into the outside parking lot to flee arriving police.

Authorities said the other suspect, 24-year-old Dashan White of Coatesville, fired at police and officers returned fire, killing him.

As part of a plea agreement, Haines also pleaded guilty to an earlier break-in at a high school. Haines' attorney, Assistant Public Defender Susanna DeWese, said her client was sorry for the trauma he had caused police.
