Suspects almost run over officer

POINT BREEZE - December 12, 2009

Police say the incident started around 4:30 a.m. when a 17th District officer on patrol noticed a motorcycle parked on the 2200 block of Wilder Street with a group of males around the motorcycle. The officer circled around the block and returned to investigate when the group of males all began to run from the scene.

Three of the males apparently got into a SUV and fled onto the 1800 block of south Ringgold Street a few blocks away when the officer pulled the SUV over.

The officer took the driver into custody and was placing him in his police car when one of the other males in the SUV jumped into the driver's seat and tried to run over the officer. That officer fired several shots at the fleeing SUV missing the occupants. The vehicle stopped and the two males were taken into custody and face numerous charges including assault on police.

Police also tell Action News that the officer fired at least three shots into the SUV. Two of the shots struck the SUV and a third went into a occupied home on Mifflin Street. Nobody was injured in the residence.
