Four arrested in Del. home invasion

NEWARK, Del. - December 14, 2009

Arrested were:

Dustin J. Hults, 20, of the 100 block of Roosevelt Ave, Newport, DE
Michael A. Ortiz , 20, of the 1500 block of Dilworth Rd, Wilmington, DE
Joel M. Ortiz , 21, of the 1500 block of Dilworth Rd, Wilmington, DE
Vincent J. Baiocco, 21, of the 2300 block of N. Washington St, Wilmington, DE

All are facing robbery, burglary and weapons charges.

The home invasion happened in the 500 building of the University Courtyard Apartments on Scholar Drive in Newark back on December 1st.

It was 1:20 a.m. when, detectives say, the suspects made noise in the hallway, which prompted a resident to slightly open their apartment door. The suspects then stormed into the residence - two of the men brandished pistols and another was armed with a knife.

The four residents and two guests, all students of the University of Delaware, were bound and their mouths were covered with duct tape.

The suspects searched the apartment, police said, while repeatedly asking about the location of illegal drugs and cash. They then removed a safe and other personal items from the apartment.

Police say a tip lead them to search Hults' home, where some of the stolen property was recovered. A search warrant was also executed on a car belonging to Michael Ortiz, which was used as the get-away car from the robbery.

Police say the suspects were actually targeting another apartment where they believed they would find drugs and/or drug money, but mistakenly entered the victims' apartment.

A police investigation into the intended apartment is on-going.

The investigation has also determined that none of the three guns displayed by the defendants were actual handguns, but rather Airsoft or BB guns.
