Demolition on Riverfront State Prison in Camden is expected to last until spring
By knocking it down, Gov. Jon Corzine is making good on a promise to city officials.
The prison was built 24 years ago amid protests. Not long after, a nearby stretch of land began to be redeveloped for tourism.
With a shrinking state prison population, state officials this year managed to shift Riverfront's inmates and employees to other facilities.
There are no firm proposals to redevelop the prison property.
