South Jersey town first to limit fertilizer

STAFFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - December 16, 2009

Stafford Township on Tuesday adopted an ordinance that will tell residents what they can use and when they can use them.

Supporters say the measure seeks to limit the effects of fertilizers on groundwater and nearby Barnegat Bay.

The ordinance bans the application of fertilizers from Dec. 15 to Feb. 15. It also bans the use of fertilizer containing phosphorous unless a soil test shows a particular area needs nutrients.

Supporters see the ordinance as part of a national movement to stop excess nitrogen and phosphorous from degrading marine life.

Opponents say it's an intrusion that will do little to prevent pollution.
