Marines are coming to the rescue -- of endangered birds.

The leathernecks will be driving their amphibious assault vehicles through the mud at Marine Corps Base Hawaii this week.

The idea is to break up weeds on the mudflats in a wildlife management area.

The annual exercises are even called "Mud Ops."

Officials say the number of Hawaiian stilts nesting in the ponds have nearly tripled since the Marines started their mud maneuvers 28 years ago.
