Students serve gourment food for less

At first glance, Careme's looks like a gourmet restaurant.

Careme's, is a restaurant run by the Culinary students of Atlantic-Cape Community College.

In the kitchen, about 14 student chefs prepare the gourmet meals and desserts while out front another dozen students are servers, hosts and hostesses.

Members of the public can enjoy a delicious, four-course lunch buffet for $14.95. Lunch is served Mondays through Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

A la carte dinners are served after 6:30, and guests can bring their own wine. Dinners average $16 -$18 per person. Reservations are required.

Diner Theresa Losasso of Waterford Works, New Jersey, described her lunch as "Fantastic. I never saw anything like this deal before in my life."

She said not only was the food delicious, but the service was exceptional.

Chef Kelly McClay, Dean of Culinary Arts, explains, "We're an educational environment and the students are obviously paying tuition and fees, which help to support the bottom line of the restaurant operation, so therefore, we're able to offer the meal on a much more reasonable basis."

And though the buffet comes with amazing desserts, the delicious deals don't end there.

Just across the hall from Careme's is Strudels... A bakery that sells whatever the six to eight baking and pastry classes produce each day.

Cakes and pies sell for three to four dollars, big cookies are about $3 a dozen, fancy little ones about $6 a pound.

Mary Jane Smith, of Absecon, New Jersey, who was leaving the bakery with a bag of scones that were still warm from the oven, said, "The students work really hard to put all these great goodies together, so I come here all the time."

She added, "It's a great place for the community to come and pick up some great goodies for less than half the price. "
