5 dead after three motorcycles, van crash

Five people are dead after an accident involving three motorcycles and a taxi van in Penn Township, Lancaster County.

One police official called it the "worst crash" he has seen in more than 20 years on the force.

Rescuers were called out for a report of a crash at around 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Rt. 72 and Auction Road.

Police say the motorcycles were travelling north when they collided with the van.

Authorities say a total of six people were on the three motorcycles, two on each bike.

Five of the six, three males and two females, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The sixth, a female rider, was taken to Lancaster Hospital in critical condition.

It is unknown if anyone on the motorcycles was wearing a helmet.

Only the driver was in the van at the time of the crash. She is in stable condition at the same hospital.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Police say the accident remains under investigation.
