It happened just before 4:00 p.m. Monday in the westbound lanes approaching the Morgantown interchange in East Nantmeal.
State police say 20-year-old Cynthia Eure of Philadelphia was driving a 2000 Chrysler minivan when it appeared to have a rear tire blow out. Eure lost control of the van and it overturned onto the shoulder.
A 5-year-old boy was unrestrained and was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Eure and three other adults received minor injuries.
There was also a 9-year-old boy who suffered minor injuries. A 2-year-old girl, not in a child seat ,with minor injuries and an 8-month-old baby, in a child seat with minor injuries. The investigation continues.
Parts of the turnpike was shut down while rescuers tended to the victims and cleared the wreckage.
