The accident occurred shortly at approximately 11:58 a.m. Tuesday in the northbound lanes of I-95 at Route 7.
Police say Cozette Sweetman, 31, of New Castle, was driving her Ford Explorer on I-95 northbound when, for an unknown reason, she lost control of her vehicle and struck the cement center median. The impact caused the SUV to overturn.
Both Sweetman and her five-year-old son were ejected.
Sweetman was transported to the Christiana Hospital where she was treated for contusions and abrasions.
The boy was also taken to the Christiana Hospital where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition with severe head trauma.
All lanes of I-95 northbound and two lanes southbound were closed for approximately two hours.
No charges have been filed, but the investigation continues.
