From August 7-8, 2010, the Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. and its charitable arm, The Pearls of Hope Foundation, join together to host the Sickle Cell Tennis Classic.
The Sickle Cell Tennis Classic was founded in 1978 and organized by Alan Clark and Wilbert Fletcher of "The Rodney Street Players" Tennis Club. The funds raised will be donated to The Nemours Children's Hospital Partnership for Children's Health to benefit sickle cell anemia resarch and programs.
During the tournament, a diverse crowd of over 600 tennis players and enthusiasts come from Delaware and surrounding states for two action-packed weekends of competitive play. From beginners to advanced players, approximately 250 players of all ages and backgrounds play in over 20 matches at 30 area courts over a two-weekend period.
By spreading the message about sickle cell disease to the community, the Zeta Omega Chapter works to improve the quality of life for those with the disease, raise awareness and support efforts to prevent and ultimately cure the disease. To find out more, visit www.sicklecelldisease.org.
For approximately 72,000 Americans with sickle cell disease, the painful crises that interrupt their daily lives serve as a constant reminder that sickle cell disease presents real day-to-day challenges.
