Sparta police say a man was walking the 20-pound miniature pinscher when it ran ahead of him on a hiking trail in Sparta Glen on Monday night.
The owner said he heard sounds of animals fighting and found his dog with serious wounds to the abdomen and a coyote standing over the dog.
Officials have decided to not close the park because the owner and dog wandered deep into the coyote's territory.
