It happened shortly before 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at a building at the intersection of Civic Center Boulevard and Convention Avenue.
The worker fell 12 feet down an elevator shaft.
He was rescued by the fire department and was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
The victim is listed in stable condition.
