Fire sweeps through 2 dozen Detroit homes

DETROIT (AP) - September 7, 2010 The fires were scattered through at least three neighborhoods Tuesday night, including along several blocks on the east side. The National Weather Service reports wind gusts of up to 50 mph.

Detroit Fire Department Capt. Steve Varnas tells the Detroit Free Press that officials don't suspect arson, but some of the fires may have been caused by dead tree limbs falling onto power lines.

WXYZ-TV reports firefighters also are battling a blaze at an abandoned building.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Messages were left by The Associated Press for Detroit fire officials.
