Man found fatally shot, patrol car struck by vehicle

WILMINGTON, Del. - September 11, 2010

At approximately 1:50 a.m. Saturday, Wilmington Police officers were patrolling the area of 8th and Monroe streets when they heard shots being fired nearby.

The officers relayed the information via the radio and while responding towards the gunfire, their marked police car was struck by a gray Dodge Shadow that was travelling in the wrong direction in the 700 block of West 8th Street.

After the collision, 3 suspects exited the car and fled on foot, one of which threw a handgun onto a rooftop of one of the houses.

All 3 suspects were apprehended as well as the weapon.

At the corner of 9th and Monroe streets, responding officers located a 28-year-old Wilmington man suffering from a single gunshot wound to his head. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene where he was then transported to the state's medical examiner's office.

The victim has been identified as Ricky English of North Walnut Street in Wilmington.

The 3 suspects involved in the accident are currently at police headquarters and being interviewed. No charges have been made at this time.

No one was injured in the accident.

The investigation is continuing.
