Harrisburg schools chief mulls kindergarten cuts

HARRISBURG, Pa. - September 14, 2010

Harrisburg schools Chief Operating Officer Shawn Farr warned drastic cuts may be necessary if state aide and property taxes remain unchanged for next year.

Farr provided no information on how much the proposals would save the district. Parents and board members were quick to question the wisdom of such serious cuts and vowed to fight for kindergarten and pre-K programs.

During a school board meeting Monday Farr also proposed cutting vocational classes and laying off support personnel.

Farr and Acting Superintendent Sybil Knight-Burney tell The Patriot-News of Harrisburg the budget hole must be dealt with now for the long-term health of the district.
