Makeup that gives independence, self-esteem

September 21, 2010 "I saved up all my money, my own money to pay for the procedure myself."

18-year-old Lisa Weatherby has cerebral palsy. When she graduated from high school this summer she decided she'd do something she has long wanted to do which is get permanent make-up.

Our cameras were there as Lisa got a touch-up on the permanent eyeliner she had applied at the Beau Institute of Permanent and Corrective Cosmetics.

"I had it in July so I've had it for about 2 months."

Lisa's mother is a nurse with a demanding schedule and a life full of responsibilities, and caring for Lisa. Like many families mornings, are their most hectic time of their day.

"I have to get my daughter ready as well as myself every day," said Myra Weatherby.

Lisa, like most young women just entering college wants to look perfect when she leaves home in the morning. But her mother told us that Lisa could not put on her own makeup. In fact, Lisa's older sister used to come from her home nearby to apply Lisa's eyeliner every day.

Rose Marie Beauchemin is an expert in permanent makeup and scar camouflage tattooing for women and men. She's been in the business for 20 years, first working with cancer victims, she now helps brain surgery patients covering the scars that never totally heal. She helps an increasing number of people who cannot apply makeup themselves.

"I work on a lot of women with visual impairments, a lot of young people with macular degeneration."

Rose Marie also trains others in the application of permanent cosmetics and scar covering techniques around the world.

"Last summer we had students from Egypt, UK, Switzerland and from South Africa."
