Twenty-three-year-old Kevin Schaeffer pleaded guilty to third-degree murder Thursday in a deal with prosecutors in the death of 19-year-old Gettysburg student Emily Silverstein.
Schaeffer killed the Roosevelt, N.J. teen in his off-campus apartment in April 2009. Authorities say they had been in a relationship that ended several weeks earlier.
Defense attorneys had planned to raise a mental health defense. Adams County District Attorney Shawn Wagner says psychological tests and a desire to spare Silverstein's family a trial prompted the plea deal.
The Oley man apologized in court for the pain he caused Silverstein's family and vowed to do good in the slain teen's memory.
