NJ town reaches agreement over Lord's Prayer

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - October 1, 2010

Lawyers for Point Pleasant Beach and the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey reached the temporary agreement on Thursday. However, the agreement does not end the ACLU's lawsuit seeking to stop the prayer.

Officials must abandon the moment of silence if the public attempts to say the Lord's Prayer at the meetings.

A small group of parishioners from St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church and others recited the Lord's Prayer when the council tried a moment of silence on Tuesday.

The Rev. Paul Varga tells the Asbury Park Press the decision to pray was spontaneous and there was no intention to protest the council's action.
