Philly, Cincy mayors bet kids books over NL series

CINCINNATI - October 7, 2010

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 in Game 1 of the NL division series Wednesday behind Roy Halladay's no-hitter, only the second in postseason baseball history.

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter have agreed that the winning city will be given 2,000 donated books for needy children.

The losing city will also receive 1,000 books donated by First Book, a Washington, D.C.-based charity that provides books to kids without access to reading material.

The mayors say the bet will address one of their communities' most urgent needs by improving literacy.
