Murphy was the first Iraq War veteran in Congress and was challenged by Fitzpatrick, whom he narrowly unseated in 2006. Both the 36-year-old Murphy and 47-year-old Fitzpatrick are lawyers, Roman Catholics and Philadelphia-area natives.
Fitzpatrick has championed open space preservation and supports development of the gas-rich Marcellus Shale region, while Murphy has pushed for troop withdrawals from Iraq and the end of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
