Pa. teen: I'm lucky to be alive after mine fall

READING, Pa. - November 29, 2010

Seventeen-year-old Joshua Stanley tells the Reading Eagle newspaper he remembers drifting in and out of consciousness after he fell 20 feet down the long-shuttered mine around 2 a.m. Saturday.

The Bechtelsville teen says he and three friends were exploring the Berks County mine when he lost his grip and fell, fracturing his skull. Stanley's friends used a cell phone to call for help and wrapped his head wound with clothes until rescuers arrived.

One of the teens with Stanley says the idea of a nighttime excursion had seemed cool. But Joshua Arndt acknowledges it "probably wasn't the smartest idea."
