Would-be pizza shop robber linked to other crimes

WILMINGTON - December 1, 2010

Nigel Sykes, 19, was arrested after the attempted robbery at a restaurant near Wilmington, Delaware on Tuesday night.

According to police, Sykes walked into Seasons Pizza in the 600 block of South Maryland Avenue around 7:47 p.m. and announced a hold-up.

However, when Sykes demanded cash from the employees, police say one of the workers grabbed him and a struggle ensued.

During that struggle the gun went off, but nobody was injured.

Other employees joined in and they were able to hold Sykes until police arrived.

Some of the workers suffered minor injuries in the struggle.

After his arrest, police say further investigation linked Sykes to a string of robberies in the Wilmington and Claymont, Delaware areas beginning on September 30, 2010.

Those crimes include robberies at a bank, two convenience stores and five restaurants.

Sykes was arraigned and sent to prison for lack of $710,500 secured bail.
