Police: Robbery suspect killed by fellow bandit

WILMINGTON, Del. - December 1, 2010

It happened around 8:50 p.m. Tuesday at Ray's Deli in the 1200 Block of Northeast Blvd. in Wilmington, Delaware.

According to police, a clerk went outside the store and was grabbed and pulled behind the business by an unknown number of suspects. He was told to give up his money or he would be shot.

As one of the suspects went through his pockets, taking cash, the clerk was able to break free and began running away.

That's when he heard gunshots.

While the gunman may have been aiming for the clerk, police say the bullets actually struck a teenager involved in the crime.

Police say several of the suspects carried the victim to the steps of a church in the 1200 block of N. Herald Street.

When police arrived, they found the body and a teenage co-conspirator still on the scene. That teen, who was not hurt, was arrested.

The teen arrested at the scene has been charged with robbery and possession of the firearm during the commission of a felony.

The identity of the victim is being withheld until all relatives have been contacted, police said. A previous report that the victim was a teen girl was not correct.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Wilmington Police Detectives at 302-576-3620 or Detective Malcolm Stoddard at 302-576-3641.
