Police in Wilmington say the child was in intensive care after Sunday's wreck. The child had been bleeding profusely from the face because of the bite.
The woman had blown the car's horn as she approached the red light but was hit by a van. Police say her car then hit a utility pole.
Neither the woman nor her grandchild were identified by authorities.
The three people in the van were not seriously hurt.
